Harper's friend and colleague, Ray Podesta introduced him to the silk screen process in the early 1950's. Harper stated, "I knew instantly that it was the ideal way to reproduce my pictures because it works best on flat, simple shapes." The Fables was one of his first series turned out in this method and is a whimsical compilation of 6 unique works: The Three Little Pigs, Little Boy Blue, Jonah and the Whale, The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg, Rock-A-Bye Baby and Humpty Dumpty. The success of this series led Harper to continue implementing the silk screening process.
